“The consumption of insulation materials per head in Turkey was 0.1 cubic meters in 2008, compared to the 0.7 cubic meters it was in Europe. Apart from recent positive developments [in the sector], we are still performing seven times as worse as compared to the European Union,” Ertuğrul Şen of the Association of Thermal Insulation, Waterproofing, Sound Insulation and Fireproofing Material Producers, Suppliers and Applicators (İZODER) recently told Anatolia news agency.
Only 10 percent of 18 million buildings in Turkey are insulated, according to Şen. “Once the building is insulated, the bills for heating and cooling get at least
reduced.” The need for natural gas or electricity in a building whose walls are externally insulated decreases to its minimum levels, he said.
The awareness of the advantages of a buildings’ insulation is very low in Turkey, according to Şen. He said İZODER was working to increase the awareness
of such advantages among people. “The money spent for heat insulation is amortized over a period of five years.”
According to him, the insulation sector in Turkey has increased in the past decade, reaching a level of $2 billion revenues this year, compared to just $300 million in 2002.
Although the insulation of buildings’ external walls is the most popular, the roof, floors and installments should also be insulated, Şen said. External insulation costs vary from 30 to 40 liras per square meters, he said, adding that any work done for under this price would be improperly done. |
