Turkmen leader inaugurates Turkish projects costing $380 mln in Ashgabat
  28.10.2011

Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov on Thursday participated in opening ceremonies for three separate Turkish construction projects at a total cost of $380 million, including a monument, a shopping mall and a sports complex, in the capital city of Ashgabat.

The former Soviet republic is preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary of independence on Oct. 27. The first project Berdimuhammedov inaugurated was the 80-meter-wide Bitaraplık Street, along with a monument. This project was constructed by İstanbul-based construction firm Polimeks at a cost of $218 million and includes 44 stores built along the new boulevard. The next project that was opened by the Turkmen leader was the Altın Asır (Golden Age) shopping mall, built by Turkish Rönesans Holding in the capital. The three-storey building cost $27 million. The final project was the Winter Games Sports Complex, again constructed by Polimeks. The company had earlier won the tender to build an Olympic Village in Ashgabat at a total cost of $2 billion. The $135 million sports complex, the first phase of the Olympic village project, was finished in two-and-a-half years and can host 10,000 spectators.

The flourishing Central Asian country has been one of the most prominent markets for Turkish contractors in the past two decades. Turkish firms have finalized billions of dollars worth of construction projects in the energy-rich country and are expected to undertake new projects in the years to come.
