London-based Lloyds, the world’s oldest insurance market, announced 823 million dollars of loss in 2011, its first after Hurricane Katrina hit the US. The company had announced 3.5 billion dollars of profits in 2010. Natural disasters all around the world had a huge cost for insurance companies. Natural disasters such as the tsunami and earthquake in Japan have reduced the investment revenue of the banks. “There is no doubt that 2011 was a tough year for the insurance business,” Lloyds CEO Richard Ward said at a press conference. “Therefore, the losses are not surprising, but this also shows what we are here for. We will help the people and enable the companies to restructure in the aftermath of a disaster. Also, despite this loss, we will keep our financial strength through strong supervision and professionalism. But there is one thing that disappoints me which is that insurance penetration has not been as high as expected in the aftermath of the natural disasters in 2011.”

The government took the long anticipated step regarding the Private Pension System. The tax refund is being replaced with government contribution and non-taxpayers will also benefit from this system. Only the profit of the savings will be taxed in reimbursement. If more than 75 percent of a certain portfolio is equities, no withholding tax will be charged. After the implementation of the legislation, there will be a three-month transition period.
