Turkey should work hard to re-build the Silk Road in order to reach $1 trillion of foreign trade in the 2023 target set by the Turkish government earlier this year said UND during a press meeting in Istanbul Tuesday.
The country stands at a connection point of a region that will supposedly host more than 40 percent of the world trade.
The Marmaray project, a rail system that combines the Asian and Anatolian sides of Istanbul from under the Bosphorus will contribute to developing transportation opportunities.
The project is estimated to be finalized by 2013.
The UND report said a Rail Silk Road might connect Europe and China, through a connection from Marmaray to Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad connection.
International Road Transport Union, or IRU, has been working to develop the road freight leg of the new Silk Road idea, the report said.
The United Nations supports the project said the UND. The association suggested the Turkish government support the international project.
The report also requested the government to undersign multi-party or mutual international deals to ease and simplify global trade and road freight. |
