Turkey´s first face transplant patient sees himself on mirror
  17.02.2012

Ugur Acar, Turkey´s first face transplant patient, saw himself on the mirror for the first time since his surgery.

On January 21, Prof. Dr. Omer Ozkan, surgeon at Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department at Akdeniz University Hospital in southern Antalya province, and his team performed the face transplant on 19 year-old Ugur Acar whose face was almost completely seared by a burning blanket when he was only 40 days old.

Acar kept the mirror in his hands for five seconds, and rapidly turned it to his face, and looked at himself for the first time since the surgery.

"I thank all Turkish doctors. This cannot be better. 2012 is a lucky year for me," said Acar.
Prof. Ozkan said that they were planning to discharge Acar from the hospital 45 days later.

The team of surgeons headed by Prof. Ozkan also performed Turkey's first double arm transplant in September 2010 and the world's first ever womb transplant from a cadaveric donor in August 2011.
