Turkey to tighten work safety rules, inspections
  16.09.2011

Turkey is preparing to demand all businesses, even those with just a single employee, fulfill all work safety regulations, the country’s labor and social security minister said Sunday at a conference.

“We have improved the culture of health and safety at work in this country,” Faruk Çelik, the labor and social security minister, said Sunday during the opening ceremony of the 19th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Istanbul.

Despite advances, however, Çelik said Turkey still had a long way to go in terms of health and safety.

Lasting for five days, the congress brings together 30 ministers, experts and representatives of civil and private organizations from more than 100 countries.

Some 176 work accidents take place every day in Turkey – with about three of them resulting in death – the minister said, citing recent data from Turkey’s Statistical Institute, TurkStat.

Workplace accidents leave at least five people disabled every day, Çelik said, adding that nearly 64,316 accidents took place in 2009, killing 1,171.
