Turkey to produce own medicine, minister says
  28.10.2011

Turkey plans to shift its health policy to produce its own medicine and develop new medical devices, the Turkish minister of industry said yesterday.

“Up to now, the state always tried to purchase medicine to make it cheaper for the public, but from now on we will start producing our own medicine and develop medical devices,” said Turkey’s Industry and Trade Minister Nihat Ergün at the Biotechnology Conference held in Fatih University in Istanbul. “Public purchasing power will be used for developing new technologies in medicine.”

The minister also said the Turkish government was working on launching an organization that would focus on developing social sharing platforms. “Turkey ranks as the third country with the biggest number of Facebook users,” said Ergün. He said Turkey should also be able to develop its own platforms, and that the share allocated to research and development in Turkey has increased and stood at about 1 percent of the country’s public expenditures. He said the share would be increased up to 3 percent by 2023.
