Turkey implements development projects in over 100 countries
  30.03.2012

Turkey´s deputy prime minister said on Thursday that Turkey had implemented development projects in more than 100 countries so far.

Ali Babacan said Turkish Cooperation & Coordination Agency (TIKA) was carrying out education, health and technical assistance projects in many countries.

"Turkey has become the emerging donor country right now. Official direct assistance we made last year is over 1 billion USD," Babacan said during the Global Forum on Humanitarian Development in Istanbul.

Turkey's Development Ministry and United Nations Development Program are co-hosting the meeting.

Babacan said more than 1 billion people were living under poverty limit in the world, and the Millennium Development Goals aimed to reduce the world population which had below 1 USD of daily income by half until 2015.

The world would need 50 percent more food, 45 percent more energy and 30 percent more water by 2030 when the increasing world population was taken into consideration, Babacan said.

Babacan said Turkey was one of the few countries in the world that could raise national income per capita and at the same time that could rehabilitate distribution of income.

Turkey was good at national income and health, but could not reach the desired education level yet, Babacan said. Babacan said therefore, the government would mainly deal with education and continue to make reforms in coming days.
