Top brains excited on gov’t plans
  09.09.2011

Turkey’s plans to manufacture its own aircraft, helicopter, car and satellite have excited Turkish engineers working at giant U.S. companies such as Boeing, Microsoft and Google.

U.S.-based Turkish engineers said they were willing to return to Turkey to be part of the large projects the country aims to develop with its national resources.

The world’s largest programming and information firm Microsoft employs 350 Turkish engineers, whereas the world’s largest search engine Google and aviation giant Boeing employ 35 and 75 Turkish engineers, respectively.

Barış Taze, a Bilkent University graduate who has been working as a software engineer at Seattle-based Microsoft for six years, said he did not see his presence there as part of a “brain drain,” but rather as an educational investment.

“I think Turkish engineers working at large U.S. companies are Turkey’s nerve endings. Most of us will one day or another return to Turkey,” said Taze, who is also the chairman of the Northwestern Turkish American Chamber of Commerce.

Noting that many Turks were currently unable to return due to a lack of suitable job positions, Taze said Turkey’s projects to produce a national aircraft, helicopter or satellite would address this problem.

Boğaziçi University graduate Taylan Yıldız, who has held the product promotion director position at Google for four years, said meritocracy was key to the company. “One will take back as much as they give here. Nobody is favored.”

Yıldız also said he would one use the knowledge acquired at Google for his own country.
