  23.08.2010

99 farmers in the Serpil Village of Isparta’s Egirdir district with a population of 750, have stopped smoking and had their fields insured within the “quit smoking, get insured” campaign.

Halil Serdar Cevheroglu, the District Governor of Egirdir said that the 99 inhabitants Serpil Village have abandoned smoking to protect their health and used the income resulting from this action to insure their fields to secure their fields. Saying that they had started the “abandoned smoking, launched insurance” campaign approximately one year ago with the initiative of City General CounselMemberVeli Gok, Cevheroglu explained that the first practice appeared in Serpil Village. Remarking that the efforts intensified in the last month, Cevheroglu said that, they initially told the citizens that smoking was harmful and that the money paid for cigarettes could be used for more beneficial purposes. Saying that they advised the farmers to get insured to secure their income Cevheroglu, added the following: “We advised them to insure themselves, their partners or their fields using the money they paid for smoking. Today the minimum price of a box of cigarettes is 3 TL, the maximum being 7,5. Multiplying this with the amount smoked gives a huge number.”
