Melbourne tops liveable city list, İstanbul 109th
  02.09.2011

Australian city of Melnourne was named on Tuesday the world’s most liveable city, while Turkey’s financial capital, İstanbul, was ranked only 109th.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, which carried out the Global Liveability Survey, assessed the cities in categories of stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure and culture and environment. This is the first time in nine years that Canada’s Vancouver is not rated the most liveable city in the survey.

Vancouver is ranked third, coming after Austria’s Vienna. Vancouver missed out on the top spot because its infrastructure score had fallen due to periodic closures of a key motorway, BBC reported.

Australian and Canadian captured seven of the top ten spots in the survey. The top ten cities are listed as follows: Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto (Canada), Calgary (Canada), Sydney (Australia), Helsinki (Finland), Perth (Australia), Adelaide (Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand).

İstanbul’s ranking places it behind cities such as Azerbaijan’s Baku, Thailand’s Bangkok, Serbia’s Belgrade and Kuwait’s capital Kuwait City. Some of the cities that had worse rankings than İstanbul are Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Mumbai (India), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Cairo (Egypt).

The report shows a slight depreciation in liveability in European cities, driven by the current crisis in the euro zone. This is particularly the case in Greece, where austerity measures and protests have resulted in a five-point drop in the ranking for Athens, which was named the 67th most liveable city in the survey.

The ten cities at the bottom of the list are Dakar (Senegal), Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire), Tehran (Iran), Doualaa (Cameroon), Karachi (Pakistan), Tripoli (Libya), Algiers (Algeria), Lagos (Nigeria), Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Harare (Zimbabwe).
