Istanbul tourism hits the roof

Istanbul, which has been designated by global research firms to be amongst the cities anticipated to experience an explosion in tourism revenue, has already seen a storm of tourists since the start of the year.



 


The number of tourists to come to Istanbul in the first five months of the year has increased by 15 percent, surpassing the three million mark. Tourism figures for Istanbul, which was last year's European Capital of Culture, are as follows; in the first month of the year, 378,380, in February 431,481, in March 556,113, in April 694,959 and in May 729,860. At a combined total of 2,790,793 tourists, the highest figure was seen from Germans and Russians, which tend to regularly frequent the southern coast. The number of foreign tourists consisted of 11.7 percent Germans, 7.1 percent Russians and 5.3 percent were from France. According to these figures, 327,266 German tourists, 199,405 Russian tourists and 147,236 tourists from France came to Istanbul in the first five months of the year. In the first five months of last year, 2,434,371 visitors came to Istanbul.
