After the welcoming speech from the President of Turkish Neurosurgical Society, ICVB General Manager Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu made a 30-minutes Istanbul presentation and informed guests about Istanbul’s congress centres, infrastructure, and importance in international congress tourism.
Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu said “Istanbul has hosted many important and large scale international congresses and events within the past 10 years and became a preferred destination for international congresses.
Consequently, the city’s worldwide ranking in ICCA’s international association meeting statistics rose from 40th in the year 2000 to 17th in 2009 by the number of international association meetings held. Increase still furthers the number of participants attending to international meetings which positions Istanbul 4th worldwide. This continuing rapid growth, particularly in light of the current challenging economic climate underlines the appeal of Istanbul as a conference tourism destination and the unique value the city’s cultural mosaic and eight millennia of history offer meeting planners. Istanbul is one of the world’s most popular, trendy and ever evolving meetings destination and is growing with further developments and investments in all parts of economic, academic, cultural and social life."
Fisunoglu also underlined the developments of the Istanbul congress centres; “”The city’s meeting infrastructure is expanding to meet the increasing potential and demands of international congresses and the city’s reputation in the market. Istanbul Congress Centre opened its doors for IMF World Bank meeting in October 2009 and brings the capacity of Congress Valley to 20.000 people together with other venues within walking distance such as Istanbul Convention & Exhibition Centre and Hilton Convention Centre. Golden Horn Convention and Cultural Centre made its opening in March 2009 and hosted the 5th World Water Forum with 25.000 participants.” Delegation headed by ICVB visited ICC-Istanbul Congress Centre and Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday, February 22. |
