IMF delegation set to visit Turkey, Greece
  02.09.2011

A delegation from the International Monetary Fund will visit Turkey in September, a top IMF official told reporters at a press briefing in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

According to David Hawley, the IMF’s deputy director for external relations, the expected IMF mission on the next “Article IV Consultation” process will start its visit Sept. 6, one day after the scheduled conclusion of its fifth review mission in Athens, the Greek capital.

The IMF consults annually with each member government as part of the Article IV Consultation process. Through these contacts, the Fund attempts to assess a country’s economic health and to forestall future financial problems.

In his briefing, Hawley also said the IMF is “following events” in Libya and awaits “an expression of the wishes from an internationally recognized government” on establishing formal contact.

According to the IMF deputy director, former managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, recently cleared of sex-crimes charges in New York, plans to make a “personal visit” to Fund headquarters soon. “It’s a personal visit during which I expect he would meet with the staff,” Hawley said, adding that the visit may be conducted as early as next week.

The IMF will release its World Economic Outlook and the Global Financial Stability Report, two eagerly awaited assessments of the global economy, on Sept. 20 and Sept. 21.
