The European-Turkish Business Confederation (UNITEE) on Monday brought leading Turkish immigrant businesspeople together with entrepreneurs and diplomats from Bulgaria and Romania, the last two countries to join the European Union, to contribute to cross-border trade within Europe, which is currently experiencing the darkest days of its economic history.

The event took place at UNITEE’s headquarters in Brussels, and the participants included Member of the European Parliament Rovana Plumb, Mugur Popovici, minister-counselor (commercial and economic) at the Romanian Embassy and Pavel Strahilov, third secretary at the Bulgarian Embassy as well as Wallonia Foreign Trade and Investment Agency Deputy General Manager Chantal De Bleu, Atalay Tamer, the Romanian-Turkish Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, and 25 entrepreneurs from Romania and Bulgaria.
The event was the second of a series entitled “Entrepreneurs meet Embassies” and aims at helping “to create a unique environment for networking and to discover new and innovative ways to promote cross-border trade in Europe,” a statement from the confederation said Tuesday. “We are delighted with the success of our event. The enthusiasm and keen interest shown by the entrepreneurs last night demonstrates clearly that there is great potential for cross-border trade among Europe’s immigrant diasporas,” UNITEE Secretary-General Savaş Metin was quoted as saying in the statement.
The confederation is the largest organization of immigrant entrepreneurs and business professionals in Europe, representing 10,000 businesspeople and 2,000 professionals belonging to 52 associations in 15 countries across the continent. Its members operate in more than 100 fields, also employing the citizens of their host countries.
