15th Afife theater awards to be presented in April
  11.03.2011

The countdown has started for the Yapı Kredi Afife Jale Theater Awards. In its 15th year, nominees are being evaluated in various categories. The winners, which will be chose from among some 100 plays staged in Istanbul, will be announced at a ceremony April 18.

Candidates are being determined in 14 categories from Best Production to Best Lighting and from Best Actor to Best Actress for the Yapı Kredi Afife Theater Awards, which aims to support theater and theater artists. The evaluations are made by a selective committee in strict confidence.

Committee members, who view all plays staged in a season, choose their winning candidates. Following this process, a different committee evaluates the candidates in the presence of a notary public.

For the 15th year of the Yapı Kredi Afife Theater Awards, a book will also be published. The book will feature 192 artists, organizations and 14 productions that have been so far awarded as well as the artists’ biographies and a summary of their theater life. The books aims to become a resource for Turkish theater.

Afife Jale Theater Awards, through recognizing individual achievement in theatrical performance, promotes respect for the Turkish theater. The awards are given in the name of Afife Jale, who could not benefit from such an award in her lifetime though she richly deserved it as the first Turkish woman to take to the theater stage. As such, she is the inspiration for these awards.
