Sultan Ahmet Mosque, the Heart of İstanbul

Sultan Ahmet Mosque, given its name to the square where it stands, completing Istanbul´s skyline with its six minarets and elegant dome, is an architectural wonder and undoubtedly is the most beautiful mosque in Istanbul; together with its social complex it was constructed at the beginning of 17th Century.

The mosque, the construction of which was started by the order of Ahmet I. the Sultan in 1609 by Architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, a student of Sinan the Architect, was completed in 1616. Completion of artworks in the social complex had continued by 1620.  The sultan wished to outshine the beauty of Hagia Sophia with this mosque, and was successful in doing so. Indeed, Sultanahmet Mosque is much more superior to Hagia Sophia in terms of both size and architectural elegancy and particularly by its external appearance. Due to its friezes, windows and glazed tiles inside in blue color this monument called "Blue Mosque" in many foreign languages covers a rectangular area of 71 meter long and 64 meters wide. The height of its dome is 43 meters and diameter of the same is 23.5 meters. Sultan Ahmet Mosque is the only mosque structured originally with 6 minarets.
